Michigan--UP

Sheryl & I have been to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan several times; we particularly like Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore adjacent to Munising.  The National Lakeshore offers a variety of landscape and waterscape.  There are jackpine forests on the sandy loam, birch on a little better soil and hardwood maple on the best soil.  Topping this off is an absolutely incredible lakeshore:  sandy beaches combined with rocky cliffs!

Gary & I were in the UP the firest week of October 2004, slightly ahead of prime color.  Gary & I seem to have a propensity for just missing the fall colors, a little ahead or a little behind.  Sort of like fishing:  you should have been here last week.  This is the Copper Harbor Lighthouse, photographed in the summer.

In the Copper Harbor area there are several lighthouses, lots of mining history and the reconstructed Fort Wilkin. Copper Harbor is at the very northern tip of the Keeweenah Peninsula.

With extensive maple forests, the Keeweenaw Peninsula also offers the potential for lots of fall color .  In additiion the peninsula offers one more asset in abundance------snow and lots of it!  The average is nearly 300" per season; caused by the "warm", moist air blowing in off Lake Superior.  I have not been to the UP in winter but it sounds like a great trip---bring your 4 wheel drive!

Gary & I have a CD guide to the UP at iDocs Photo Tours.  And, of course, I have an album with many more UP photos at Shutterfly.  Please feel free to check out both sites.
